Eighth Grade Guest Speaker

Exciting news in Mrs. Sams 8th grade Reading class!  The eighth graders just finished reading and discussing Elie Wiesel’s Night, a memoir about Elie’s experience with his father in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald during World War II.

In addition to reading and discussing Night, Saint Thomas 8th graders experienced a rare opportunity and heard Steve Coppel, (who’s father Werner Coppel was a Holocaust survivor) speak about his father’s experience on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.  Steve Coppel is the son of two Holocaust Survivors, Trudy and Werner Coppel. Steve will share his parents amazing story of survival, perseverance, rebuilding and love. Steve’s Dad (Werner) was a survivor of Auschwitz.  He was the first Holocaust Survivor in Cincinnati to speak publicly about his experiences.

Mr. Coppel’s goal is to continue carrying this message because it is so vital. Steve is one of the exhibit Interpreters at the Holocaust and Humanity Center as well as a member of the Coppel Speakers’ Bureau which was named in memory of his parents.

It was a once in a lifetime experience for our eighth graders to hear from this very special guest.
